The new ICPR programme "Rhine 2040", adopted at the 16th Conference of Rhine Ministers in 2020, has set the goal to preserve, protect and restore Rhine-typical habitats by 2040. The biotope network on the Rhine has to improve considerably due to the expansion of core areas and the interconnection of suitable sufficiently large stepping stone biotopes. The basis for the activities regarding the biotope network continues to be the concept of the "Biotope Network on the Rhine".
In the new ICPR work plan 2022-2027, the area-wide evaluation of the implementation of the "Biotope Network on the Rhine" using innovative investigation and monitoring methods (e. g. remote sensing) as well as the review of the concept of the biotope network have been included.
The present report, together with the results of the area-wide biotope type mapping on the Rhine 2020, is an important component of the success control for the implementation of the biotope network concept.
The digital atlas of the network of biotopes along the Rhine shows the results of the biotope type group mapping of 2020 as well as measures and their project description. Furthermore, priority and deficit areas with importance for or impact on the network of biotopes including recommendations for action per biotope type group are presented.
