If, in spite of all preventive measures, a sudden water pollution event occurs in the rivers Rhine, Neckar, Main and minor tributaries, the International Warning and Alarm Plan Rhine (IWAP) is activated to reliably warn and inform the authorities and drinking water works in the Rhine bordering countries. Polluters may then also be identified with the help of search reports. Mainly, an internet application is used for the IWAP-communication.
Since 1985 seven international main warning centres - R1 to R7 - with determined areas of responsibility have been cooperating within the IWAP.
