ICPR – International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine

Water retention – targets until 2040

  • Another 200 km2 of floodplains will be restored and 100 oxbow lakes will be reconnected to the Rhine. The floodplain-typical habitats will be better protected and interconnected (see also Rhine 2040, target on biodiversity).
  • The risk of flood damage will be reduced by an additional 15 % by 2040.
  • By 2030, the flood retention volume is to increase to about 540 million m3. Sites for additional flood retention basins and dike relocations will be identified.
  • Undeveloped floodplains are kept free of new constructions. New buildings in risk areas that cannot be avoided will be flood-adapted.

Water retention measures along the Rhine can be viewed in the Rhine Atlas.

Further details on the measures can be found here. This table shows the current state of implementation and planning of retention measures along the Rhine (in German).
